The Bard of Barking

So I said I wouldn't be updateing all the time but today was awesome. I saw Billy Bragg at an instore in HMV. It was great, there was nobody there and it was really intimate and awesome. Here are some pics...................
I was about 2 people back, but there was only about 60 or 70 there anyway.

Anyone who doesn't know who this guy is should do yourself a favour and have a listen to his music. Here a couple of videos.

This one is awesome!

Was an awesome performance, very short but very good

This week in Toronto

Hey Guys, we just kicking it this week. I am going to try and update this thing once a week, we will see how it goes.

This week we did a few more sightseeing things, we went to the hockey hall of fame! Although it wasn't particularly interesting because we know nothing about hockey or the NHL. This is the one person I recognised. Wayne gretsky, known to the locals as "the great one"
I had my own attemp at a slapshot at goal, I shall now be know as the "the not great one"
Other highlights were the hockey world cup hall of fame.

And the Stanley cup, this is the trophey you get when you win, it has the name of each member of each team engraved on it, so its massive.
Last weekend there were a couple of festivals on. On our main street there was "a taste of little Italy" they closed of College street for a couple of blocks and had it filled with food and music and stalls and stuff, was kinda cool, but not much there apart from a ton of Italians and portugeese.

These guys were cool though.
This was heartbreaking to see though, especially in the month that I chose to give up meat! I would have given anything for a bite of this bad boy. Sarah was unimpressed!
The other festival that happened over the weekend was North by Northeast, and it was awesome. You paid $29 for a pass for the weekend and it allowed entry to any gig or movie that was part of the festival. There were over 500 bands playing in every venue in town.
On Thursday I saw Strike anywhere and the flatliners, plus a few good local acts.

On friday it was the St. Catherines and the Real Mackenzies, both were great nights.
The real mackenzies are like a Canadian/Scottish punk combo, the Sainte catherines were great though! They rocked it and then came back and played a set of County and bluegrass and stuff using the name yesterdays ring. The bands were all great but the highlight was seeing Nubs. Any NoFX fan thats reading take note. The song She's nubs on the war on Errorism CD is actually about this chick from Toronto. She has no arms and hardly any legs and a huge Mohawk. I would suggest everyone listen to the song cause its really funny. Anyways, she goes to all the shows and we saw her both nights.
This was actually after the Sainte Catherines played.
At first I wasn't sure about it, and I didn't want to ask just in case, but its really her, I spoke to some locals and they all know her. It was classic.

A Guided tour of Toronto

So now we have a place to live we have a chance to actually have a look around town. We bought city passes and have been checking out the sights the last few days.
First we went to Casa Loma, its this massive house that looks like a castle, a really rich guy built it early last century but went broke. The city took it over and its one of the main attractions.
This is the main hall, the pipes at the end are a huge organ thats built into the house.
He had secret staircases from his office to the cellar, maybe so he could have a drink without his wife finding out. (I don't think the sign is original)
This was his bedroom.
Bathroom

The view from his house would be awesome, its a shame we went on a bad day. You could see all the way to the lake if it was clear
Nice gardens too
I like this photo.
The ride home was hot so we stopped for a beer, I think Sarah got more than she bargained for.
The next day we hit the zoo, was really cool. Here are a few of our favourites.

This guy wasn't part of the zoo but he was cool
We really wanted to see the Canadian animals, but it was so hot they were all hiding or just sitting down.
The next day was also real hot, we went to the baseball.

The Toronto Blue Jays lost, but this guy still looked like he was having a good time.
I don't think I am going to become a baseball fan, there is more stuff happening off the field than on, Sarah got a bit bored too I think.
Going to visit a few more attractions this week so stay tuned for the rest of our guided tour of Toronto

No longer homeless!

Good news, we finally have a place to live! We now call 492 Crawford St home.

If you wanna send a letter, present, donation, care package the address is

492 Crawford St
Toronto
MG6 3J8

The house is an old duplex that has been turned in two flats, we live on the bottom floor and loungeroom is in the basement. We have 3 other dudes living in the flat.
This is our room.

The houses here are all really old, and they have all kinda sunk down and been turned in flats, some rooms it looks like a funhouse. The basement is home to the living room and 2 bedrooms, the roof is so low I can't hardly stand in some areas.
This is the hallway down to our room, it gets thinner as you head down, you almost have to turn sideways to get down there.
The neighbourhood we live in is actually little italy, so just down the road there is heaps of italian restaurants and bars. The streets are really nice, they have tons of trees and nice houses.
Its about 30 minutes walk to the main city area. But there is a tram about 300 metres away to take us there quicker. But to get there even quicker we brought some bikes. Toronto is really flat so its perfect for riding around, and we can be anywhere we need to be in minutes.
This is mine, its extreme. I think it might have belonged to the dude who climbed the tower at one stage. (maybe 1990)
Sarahs is equally rad
We are now bmx bandits so look out!
